چکیده

Subtle variations in ink color and paper of postage stamps can affect their value and desirability to collectors and investors. Protoninduced Xray emission spectrometry (PIXE) is a generally nondestructive forensic analysis tool that reveals the concentrations of chemical elements in a sample. PIXE has been used for more than 30 years, sometimes in conjunction with other analytical methods, to differentiate philatelic printing techniques; to quantify differences between different shades, varieties, and reprints of stamps; and to separate genuine stamps from forgeries. This paper reviews the history of philatelic paper and ink analysis by PIXE through a focus on case studies from the 1980s to the present. For example, PIXE has been used to show distinct chemical signatures between genuine stamps from China, Czechoslovakia, Eastern Silesia, South Africa, SouthWest Africa, and Taiwan and forgeries thereof. PIXE analysis showed how variations in ink chemistry control color shades of stamps from Mexico and reveal the origin (country of printing) of Iranian stamps, suggesting early (pretwentieth century) utilization of organic inks on Europeanprinted stamps from both nations. The technique was utilized to determine variations in paper types on stamps from China and Taiwan and how original People’s Republic of China stamps from the early 1950s can be separated from modern reprints. The paper concludes with a PIXE investigation of Mexico’s 1895–1898 “Mulitas” stamps. The analysis reveals that unlike previous Mexican issues, the Mulitas were printed with organicbased inks on largely clayfree papers. Differing amounts and/or formulations of metal (zinc, lead, and titanium) oxide whiteners apparently controlled the presentday color shade of the stamps, either directly or indirectly, with bluish inks having relatively more zinc and lead and greenish inks having relatively more titanium.

Background: Proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) has been applied as reliable and improved techniques in this study to compare concentration of various trace elements in normal and abnormal varicose veins. Materials and Methods: Five samples from normal veins and 13 samples from varicose veins bombarded by 2.0 MeV energy proton beams produced by a Van de Graff accelerator in vacuum. T...

Investigation of heavy trace elements in neoplastic and non-neoplastic human thyroid tissue: A study by proton-induced X-ray emissions.

Background: Within the context of developing techniques to facilitate the diagnosis of the thyroid diseases, the elemental composition of pathological thyroid tissue (neoplastic and non-neoplastic) was investigated by proton induced X-ray emission. The PIXE has been widely used as a sensitive technique for trace elemental analysis in both biological and medical fields. Materials and Methods: Th...

Micro-pixe analysis in invasive ductal carcinoma tissues after treatment of astaxanthin

Background: Trace elements play an important role in a number of biological processes. Astaxanthin (ASX), a carotoid pigment found in certain marine plant and animals, has shown anti cancer and anti free radical properties. This work intended to understand the effect of Astaxanthin in breast cancer (invasive ductal carcinoma, IDC) by using micro-pixe method. For this aim the concentratio...

Pulsed DC- Plasma Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition of α-rich Nanostructured Tantalum Film: Synthesis and Characterization

This paper is an attempt to synthesize nanostructured tantalum films on medical grade AISI 316L stainless steel (SS) using pulsed DC plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition (PACVD). The impact of duty cycle (17-33%) and total pressure (3-10 torr) were studied using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), grazing incidence x-ray diffraction (GIXRD), nuclear reaction analysis (NRA)...
